Hanoi: Vinh Quang Hotel:(悪徳ホテル)
"Sticky Fingers, Dirty Rooms, and Screaming Managers"
My girlfriend and I have just left Hanoi and we had a really bad experience at the Vinh Quang Hotel on 24 Hang Quat Street. We were just looking for a cheap backpacker style place and were not expecting anything fancy. We agreed on a price with the manager before checking in.
The rooms were quite dirty even by budget travel standards, though. It was also so noisy that we had to check out the next morning.
Upon checkout, we were presented with a bill with a 50% service charge" and "government tax." We had been travelling in Vietnam for 3 weeks and had never encountered any extra charges once we agreed on a room price, so we were very suspicious.
When we tried to ask the desk clerk (politely and calmly) about the extra charges, he became enraged and started screaming at us and threatening us. He told us he would call his friends unless we paid, and he tried to charge us a $2 fee for "bad behaviour" and another $5 fee for sitting in the lobby and taking up space. He tried to shame us and say he was "so poor" (but he was wearing a nice gold watch and silk shirt). We spoke to several other guests and they were as surprised by the "service charge" as we were.
When we checked into our next hotel, we found that our camera lenses had been taken out of our bag during the argument with the manager. It was a truly unpleasant (not to mention expensive!) experience. There are lots of other nice places to stay in the Old Quarter- don't support the Vinh Quang Hotel.
